Mamori Sound Project

Mamori Sound Project
Workshop/residency for sound artists at Mamori Lake (Amazon, Brazil)
November - December 2008 - 2 weeks

Conceived and directed by Francisco López
"Mamori Sound Project" is a 2-week workshop/residency for professional and semi-professional artists with previous experience in the area of sound experimentation and field recordings. It takes place at Mamori Lake, in the middle of the Brazilian Amazon, and involves theoretical/discussion presentations, field work and studio work. The workshop/residency has a special focus on creative approaches to the work with field recordings, through an extensive exploration of natural sound environments. It does not have a technical character but is instead conceived and directed towards the development and realization of a collective project of sonic creation with the interaction of all participant artists.

Francisco López, director of “Mamori Sound Project”, is internationally recognized as one of the major figures of the experimental music and sound art scene. He is also a Ph.D. ecosystem biologist, with regular teaching activity in Spain and Latin America. His experience in the field of sound creation and work with environmental recordings spans over a period of more than 25 years. His work has been released by more than 170 record labels worldwide and he has been awarded three times with honorary mentions at the competition of Ars Electronica Festival. He has realized hundreds of field recording projects, commissions, live performances, sound installations and workshops, as well as research in entomology and ecosystem dynamics, in 50 countries in the five
continents, with a particular emphasis on tropical areas in the Americas, Africa and Australasia. He has carried out similar workshops at Mamori Lake over the past few years and has a detailed sonic knowledge on its surrounding environments.

Whispering in the Leaves

A major new sound installation at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens

Presented as part of AV Festival 08: 29th February – 9th March 2008

Artists’ Talk & Desert Island TV: Sat 8 Mar, 2.30 -3.30pm
Chris Watson discusses his new work Whispering in the Leaves. The talk will be followed by Desert Island TV, where Chris will introduce and screen BBC nature documentary the Life of Birds made with David Attenborough. Free, for bookings contact info@avfestival.co.uk

For AV Festival 08, Watson has created a powerful new sound work derived from his extensive archive of wildlife and on location recordings in Central and South America - habitats that host over half of the planet’s wildlife. Diffused through the tropical foliage of the enclosed botanical environment of the Winter Gardens, which is home to over 2,000 flowers and plants, the surround soundtrack of wildlife dawn and dusk choruses will be transmitted at hourly intervals throughout the day for 15-20 minute durations – the approximate time taken in the rainforest for the transitions from darkness into light, and from daylight to dark. The sound pieces feature the calls and voices of thousands of species, including the howls and shrieks of black howler and spider monkeys, the musicality of diverse birdsong and the shimmering and hissing of tree frogs and cicadas. A highly sensory and captivating experience, Whispering in the Leaves is a remarkable demonstration of the power of sound recordings and natural history broadcast to transport us to far flung, inaccessible and often extraordinary locations.

Music Review: Berio’s “Sequenzas”

The New York Philharmonic is paying a great deal of attention this season to the Italian avant-garde composer Luciano Berio, who died in 2003. Last week Lorin Maazel delivered a commanding account of “Sinfonia,” a tumultuous 1969 work for orchestra with amplified voices. Still ahead are performances of Berio’s “Folk Songs” (in March) and “Rendering” (in May).

Pursuit: IRCAM musical series

Pursuit I: Contacts

Instrumental sounds and electronics, sounds and noises, fixedness and movement, the piano and electronics, these juxtapositions - innovative in 1960 - can be found in a new production of Kontakte by Stockhausen that surrounds the listener in an ever-changing perception.

Produced by wave generators, the tape creates a continuum of timbres, a permanent transition between pitches and rhythms, an immense Momentform (lit. moment form). Influenced by the thoughts and works of Stockhausen, who he discovered during the 1970s, Philippe Manoury presents his latest creation for piano and orchestra in this Pursuit at the Bouffes du Nord.

Karlheinz Stockhausen © Max Nyffeler"It is not a question of forms in which an instant would only be a tiny piece of a timeline, a moment, a particle of a given length of time, but forms in which the concentration on the now would create a kind of vertical incision that would cut through a horizontal representation of time until the absence of time that I call eternity: an eternity that does not start at the end of time, but that can be reached inside each moment."
Karlheinz Stockhausen, Momentform, texte zur elektronischen und instrumentalen Musik, volume 1, 1963.

Program

  • Karlheinz Stockhausen Kontakte
  • Philippe Manoury Terra Ignota, in memoriam Karlheinz Stockhausen
Commissioned by the Orchestre Poitou-Charentes and the Festival de l'Épau, World Premiere
